A Few Good Things – Vol. 3

Gin Blossoms/Blues Traveler

Every once in a while, I’ll take a YouTube dive into old bands that I like. I’m curious how they sound now, and for the most part, they don’t sound very good. One band in particular is The Gin Blossoms, who I love, but sound pretty terrible these days. But YouTube recommended this video of a mashup between The Gin Blossoms and Blues Traveler which was promoting their upcoming tour, and I thought it sounded pretty good. Definitely the best I’ve heard them live in quite some time.

Revival

Last year, I began reading Hack/Slash after discovering it was about a final girl attacking monsters who prey on innocent people. I found it to be the comic book equivalent of an 80s B horror movie. It’s campy, sleazy, and a lot of fun.

This year, I began collecting comics and I’ve been reading Rogue in a Savage World and Red Sonja vs Army of Darkness. I realized when writing my review of Red Sonja vs. Army of Darkness, the author Tim Seely was the same author from Hack Slash and Rogue in a Savage World. This made me want to check out more of his work.

After following him on Instagram, he promoted a new show on SyFy called Revival based on a comic series he wrote a few years ago. I decided to give it a shot, and I found it to be an interesting enough pilot that I’m optimistic it may turn out to be a good show. It’s a unique take on zombies and so far the cast is what really drives the show.

BJs

I live near Costco and at one time it was a place we’d visit monthly. My wife loves the clothes, and I love deals, and the fact that its within walking distance is great. But, over the past few years, its become so busy that its an absolutely miserable experience no matter what time you choose to go there. Late last year, we went, and I made it about halfway through the store before I said screw this and I walked out. I haven’t been inside it since.

I do order bulk supplies like paper towels, dish washing liquid, and protein bars through the Costco website, and yes, I feel like a total jerk having these items shipped from Minnesota to my apartment vs. walking into Costco, but I just can’t anymore. I mean, the last two times I went I actually had to park in an apartment parking lot because there was nowhere to park after circling for fifteen minutes.

My buddy JD convinced me to give BJs a try. I had a membership over a decade ago, but I mostly used it for gas. My wife and I walked in on Saturday expecting a chaotic scene, but it was very reasonable with room to breathe, and in a strange way, better things for us. There are more diverse food options, and I found the men’s clothing to be more suitable for my style. We were able to shop comfortably and park at a reasonable distance, and it was a HUGE relief. It also helped the prices were comparable, some things were cheaper, somethings a dollar or two more expensive, but it was all very fair. There are some things Costco has that are better (women’s clothes for my wife style, Kirkland Protein Bars, a pharmacy) but we’ll see if its worthwhile to keep our Costco membership now that we can actually walk into BJs and shop without feeling like I’m in the middle of a riot.

Digg

It’s questionable whether this is a “good thing”, but I thought I’d mention it. I’m part of the alpha testing of the Digg iOS app and works well so far. It’s still extremely limited, but what little time I’ve spent on it has been impressive.

The problem is, eventually this will be open to everyone, and all this talk of being the “anti-reddit” goes out the window when the reddit users bring their same conversations, rage, and chaos to this platform. We’ve seen how this has played out on the Fediverse, and I really don’t have much hope Digg is going to do anything more than just spread the rage or split the rage on a new platform.
