A Few Good Things – Vol. 6

Suddenly Susan

I’m a sucker for 90s sitcoms, especially those that are largely forgotten. The other day, I was itching to spend a $15 Fandango at Home gift card, and I saw there was a promotion for some television series. Long story short, for $25 I picked up The Dukes of Hazzard and Suddenly Susan, a late 90’s NBC series starring Brooke Shields.

I really liked Suddenly Susan, and haven’t seen an episode since the 90s. It was in the same boat as The Single Guy and Veronica’s Closet as shows that just sort of disappeared, and I had no idea it was even available to purchase. The moment I made my payment, I proceeded to watch the first three episodes, and I’m very satisfied with my purchase. It’s definitely not a great show, but it brings back some memories and offers a nice little distraction. Plus, I got the entire series of The Dukes of Hazzard as well for $25! Yee-haw!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

I have a confession to make, despite being a huge Trekkie, I haven’t stayed up-to-date with Strange New Worlds. Look, I love Anson Mount as Captain Pike, and I love the adventure of a week format, but there are a few things I don’t care for.

  1. I don’t care for the TOS era. I’m a TNG/DS9/Voyager guy.
  2. I struggle with the episodes focusing on Uhura. The character is painful to watch and every time I get to an Uhura centered episode, I struggle to get past it. And so, since July 2023, I never made it past Lost in Translation, the sixth episode of season two until a few days ago.

And thank God I finally finished that episode, because I got to Those Old Scientists, the Lower Decks crossover episode and it was AMAZING! I laughed so hard, and I cannot believe they managed to pull that off. What a great episode, I’m excited to finish up the season and catch up on season three.

Robocop: Unfinished Business

I wasn’t sure if I was going to pick this up, especially since I hadn’t finished my replay of the first game on Xbox, but I had a four-day weekend, and the $30 price tag was too good to pass up. This was originally planned as DLC but is a standalone adventure that is basically Robocop meets The Raid/Dredd, and yes, it’s as fantastic as you’d imagine.

I will say, having purchased the original game on launch day as well as this one, this game is more glitchy. There are some framerate issues on occasion, as well as lip-syncing, and some other minor graphical annoyances. Nothing a quick patch won’t fix. The gameplay is more of the same from the last game, with some new enemies thrown in, including some that I’m pretty sure are lifted/modified from Terminator: The Resistance. I’m not mad about it. It’s a blast playing as Robocop again, and I enjoy the B movie and AA video game experience.

Hellrasier: Revival (NSFW: Trailer includes nudity)

So… had you told me that a single player Hellraiser game was coming out with Doug Bradley portraying Pinhead once more, I would have thought you were insane. I mean, that can’t be real, can it? Well, a surprise trailer dropped (with quite a bit of nudity) and sure enough, it’s the most exciting thing to happen to the franchise since the ‘meh’ Hulu movie that came out a few years ago.

Hellraiser is a very interesting franchise to turn into a video game. I mean, it lacks the camp and fun of Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th and its quite dark. I mean, it’s one of those franchises you watch as a kid, and don’t 100% understand, but you feel icky once it’s over.

So, I’m thrilled to see where this is going to go in a video game format, and I hope it does well. I would love some single player experiences with all my favorite horror franchises, since I’m really not much of a four-on-one asymmetrical multiplayer type of gamer. Those games always benefit the folks who have too much time on their hands and can master every element of the map and I just don’t have the time and energy to do that these days.

Ergonomic Staple Remover

For the lamest entry in this week’s A Few Good Things, I’d like to give a shout-out to the amazing ergonomic staple remover. I’ve seen these at previous jobs, but never had much of a use for them. Now that I’m drowning in 20+ year old paperwork, all of which needs to be unstapled to be scanned, I decided to purchase one of these for myself. I never imagined it would improve my life so much. Best four dollars I’ve spent in a long time.
